Admission Decision Types

CUNY operates on a rolling admission basis; however, specific colleges and programs may close before posted application postmark deadlines. Upon review of the Admission Application, applicants will receive notice of their admission decision. Freshman applicants will be notified by each college choice as listed on the application. Transfer applicants will be notified by one college choice. The following table provides information regarding admission decision types at CUNY.

General Freshman Applicants >>

General Admission

An applicant who receives notification indicating he/she has been admitted as a General Freshman has been offered a space at the CUNY college for the academic term indicated.

Conditional Admission

An applicant who receives notification indicating he/she has been conditionally admitted to a CUNY four-year college has not demonstrated college-level readiness in reading, writing or mathematics.

To complete his/her admission review, the applicant will be contacted by the college to take the CUNY Assessment Test (CAT) for Conditional Admission. Results on the CAT will be used to determine whether or not the applicant is offered admission to the four-year college. It is important that the applicant prepare for the CAT by using the online resources available at the CUNY Assessment Testing website »

SEEK/CD Admission

An applicant who receives notification indicating he/she has been admitted into a SEEK or College Discovery (CD) program at a CUNY college must meet specific income eligibility conditions at the college. An applicant who does not meet the income eligibility conditions will not be offered admission to the college. Contact the college directly for more information.

Denied Admission

An applicant who receives notification indicating that he/she has been denied admission was not offered admission into the college indicated.

An applicant who is denied admission to all of his/her college choices may be offered a space at another CUNY college that best matches his/her academic profile. He/she may choose to enroll at any one of the six CUNY community colleges. For more information, contact the Help Desk for Students at aonline@mail.cuny.edu or call (212) 997-2869.
